Sabine Marcelis ‘Maloja Fog’ The EP Barn, Maloja 10 Jul – 12 Sep 2026

At the top of the Engadin, where the road climbs out of the Bregaglia to the pass, a low cloud sometimes gathers and slides down the valley in one long, slow line. People here call it the Maloja Snake. It was filmed as early as 1924, and in 2014 it lent its imagery to Olivier Assayas’s Clouds of Sils Maria. This summer it gives Sabine Marcelis a subject.

Etage Projects is pleased to present Maloja Fog, a solo exhibition by Sabine Marcelis and the first show at The Barn, the gallery’s new space in Maloja. Marcelis works with light the way other designers work with wood or steel. She casts it into resin, layers it into glass, and lets colour do the rest. At 1,815 metres, in mountain light that changes by the hour, those materials behave in ways no gallery interior can reproduce. The barn is not a backdrop for the work. It is closer to a collaborator.

At the centre of the show are new works from her foggy gradient mirrors: coloured glass that shades from clear reflection into a soft, frosted haze, part mirror, part light source, part weather. Alongside them stand pieces from her Soap series in cast resin, the semi-polished tables she first developed with Etage Projects in 2018, their rounded edges catching and bending the daylight as it crosses the room. Set against the timber of the barn, the works read less as objects on display than as instruments tuned to the light around them.

There is a longer history in this valley. In 1894 the painter Giovanni Segantini settled in Maloja at the same altitude, drawn by the clarity of the high mountain light. He worked outdoors in all weather on the vast canvases that became his Alpine Triptych, and he is buried in the village. A practice built on light, arriving in the landscape that once obsessed him, is the quiet argument beneath this show.
