The design duo Soft Baroque blur the boundaries between acceptable furniture typologies and conceptual representative objects. Trained in furniture and graphic design respectively, they explore objecthood and the perception of materiality in the age of digital image cultures. Their project Soft/Hard, commissioned by Etage Projects for Design Miami Basel Curio 2016, sees the sensory manipulation of interior design objects like benches and shelves, and the automated value inscription embedded in everyday objects. The surfaces of materials, like exotic wood and granite, are scanned and digitally printed onto silk textiles.
Both Royal College of Art graduates, Saša Štucin and Nicholas Gardner work simultaneously in object design and art. Their London based practice focuses on creating work with conflicting functions and imagery, without abandoning beauty or consumer logic. They are keen to blur the boundaries between acceptable furniture typologies and conceptual representative objects.

About: Soft Baroque introduces pearl screws in the Pearl Mirror Cabinet, which combines a bathroom mirror with a cabinet behind, embellished with pearl screws. Screws are a super normal and universal method for creating structures, however it is often embarrassing for a designer to leave them exposed. Possibly from nostalgia for traditional timber joinery or the desire for the visual purity, screws are filled, plugged, hidden or covered. Freshwater pearl screws tops are the overcompensation for this delusion, a marriage between the most economical construction system and the cultural value of natural pearls.

About: Corporate Marble is a series of marble pieces constructed from resin and glass fibre. A craft process generally reserved for high-performance components, with shattered stone slabs: a mainstay material of luxurious corporate lobbies and buffed stone floors. These contractions are exaggerated and forms of contemporary product solutions, revealing inconsistencies and false functional rationalities about modern consumer tastes.

Materials: Aluminum dancing shelf, air hardening clay
Dimensions: 40 x 44 x 115 cm
About: The primitive aesthetic has permeated into contemporary design language as a way of reconnecting ourselves to basic forms of craft in the modern environment. The dancing shelf, the donor skeleton, is the antithesis of this, a gimmick condensed out of the Chinese manufacturing industry, with little relation to the handcrafted. Primitive Progressive plinth is a dynamic display that re-animates and anthropomorphizes the idea of the standardized white cube plinth. The ambition of a plinth is to appreciate the beauty of an artwork, this is a hyper-real version of this function and arguable more high performance. Its twisting and shifting frame makes it mesmerizing and hypnotic.
Primitive Progressive Plinth is a part of group show 'The Plinth Projects' , on show 18th November 2016 to 21 January 2017 at Etage Projects.

These contradictions are exaggerated and forms of contemporary product solutions, revealing inconsistencies and false functional rationalities about modern consumer tastes.
Traditionally a craftsman's practice would be in proximity to the raw material used to fabricate objects. In the same fashion Soft Baroque produces work in the context of the metropolitan environment: processed materials manufactured for the domestic interiors and the DIY market are manipulated to unconventional ends. These new raw materials are converted into objects that still posses an echo from their intended use.
Soft Baroque regularly employs materials and processes that are often in contradiction, mashing mass produced ready-mades and components with a polished design sensibility. They operate at the intersection where craft and consumer logic meet. Their practice redefines classic typologies and removes them from their source material, rendering a new set of aesthetic and functional values.

Materials: Southern yellow pine, flock and screws
Dimensions: 69 x 69 x 42 cm
About: Renderings are becoming more diabolic and sophisticated, representations of reality are appearing in higher resolution. Meanwhile in the real world thin skins wrap cheap composites to imply value, these imitations, often of the natural, are functional fictions. New Surface Strategies is a visual system that examines infinite digital capacity versus the real world. Flexibility of digital imaging allows surface references to fade in and out, without the burden and expense of manual labour. Out of the blue, the digital skin enables the surface to absorb different material identities.
The planks of a uniform dimension are flocked chroma blue to make a pre-finished material, which is cut and assembled together. This type of construction is a reference to Gerrit Rietveld, Enzo Mari and other lo-fi plank wizards, but it is soft and plush, padding out modernism’s sharp corners. By keying out the blue colour, the surface of the furniture can be digitally substituted for another surface input. A live camera feed displays the chairs with altered surface textures applied to deceive the eye. Surface exists indifferently from the physical material and can be more finely tuned to commercial feedback loops.

Materials: Bubinga veneer and digital print on silk
Dimensions: 50 × 50 × 5 cm
About: Project Surface Service sees the sensory manipulation of interior design objects like benches and shelves, and the automated value inscription embedded in everyday objects. The surfaces of materials, like exotic wood and granite, are scanned and digitally printed onto silk textiles. Analysing the idea of a digital veneer, these objects negotiate what happens when materiality travels from the physical to electric signals and pulses, and back again. As objects, they defy any obvious compartmentalisation in art or design, and humorously explores the critical hierachies that exists between functionalist and aesthetic objects. The project lends itself to trending discourses of object oriented ontology and speculative realism, without abandoning our perverted sense of consumer logic.

Materials: Acrylic top, aluminium T-slot framing and coloured sand
Dimensions: 45.7 × 124.5 × 40 cm
About: I will love you forever if you bring desert to my living room is recreation of a fictitious natural substance, a domesticated mini desert. The sand surface changes when touched, like dunes in the desert. Dig your latte in the sand or rest your feet to relax.
In contrast with the sand, the table is constructed from aluminium T-slot framing, a popular profile for making custom machinery and equipment. A structural host that can support any substance.
I will love you forever if you bring desert to my living room was commissioned by Depot Basel for the Superprojekt: What is Contemporary, curated by Matilda Krzykowski. Exhibited at Depot Basel and Chamber NYC as part of Collection #3 Pt 2 - This is Today series.
